OB X-mas Parade!

The OB Christmas Parade was last night and OB was out in all it's glory. We had a great spot across from Hodad's..... enjoy the pics.

The Dog Wash crew went for high production values with the new balloon....

While Surfrider opted for the personal touch as an army of volunteers passed out tide books to the crowd. Here's Belinda working the magic.

Hodad's lent their famous micro-bus to the San Diego Derby Dolls....

While one of the crowd favorites made their annual appearance--The Ocean Beach Ladies Lawn Chair Brigade who are "Folding for Freedom". Check out their moves and the patriotic lawn chairs.

I wish I had the camera out faster for this one... The enormous walking robot giraffe! Check out the guy in the drivers seat--this thing was huge! He had speakers built into the legs, lights flashing, and the crowd went wild as he "walked" it down Newport Ave. I'm watching for him next year....

Trucker chose to watch this year, instead of marching with the Dog Beach dogs. He liked the horses & motorcycles--aren't those are big, loud dogs, Truck?!

Some other highlights were the tiny hot rod kids with customized (and loud) hot rods, the guy who went the length of Newport balancing on a giant bouncy ball, the OB Off-Key Choir, Sunset Cliffs Surfing Association Band, playing Lowrider & Wipeout, the OB Geriatrics Surf Club, all the classic cars, hot rods & choppers, and everyone else who had gigawatts of lights and ear-splitting noise. Only in OB!

Bamboo Fins

Marlin at 101 Fins sent over these beautiful handmade bamboo fins. These are his personal "K9" template designed to take advantage of bamboo's unique flex characteristics and years of San Diego quad research. Front fins are single foiled, rear fins are double foiled. They're going in the biofoam 5'9" for a visit to Blacks tomorrow.

EDIT: I've been riding these fins for the past few days at Blacks and the Cliffs and they are amazing! The board feels extremely fast with a new springy bounce off the bottom turn. The bamboo has a crisp flex that sends you flying out of turns with speed, speed and more speed. Thanks Marlin, these fins are fantastic.

I want one, too!

As long as I was shaping a quad fish for Jared, I decided that I want one, too. This one is 5'9.5" x 20.5" with a pulled in tail, no bumps, and a deep double to single concave. I gave it some extra love with the wax--can you see the koi?

Tested at Black's...this one has the Smooth Glide.

Extra special thanks to Rich "Toby" Pavel for all of his help on these boards. If you don't know, Pavel is the inventor of the Speed Dialer, and has probably done more for quad fish (and quad fish shapers) than anyone in the world. Beyond that, he's cool. Thanks Professor Pavel, you are the man.

Jared Comes to Visit

I met Jared on the boat to Witch's Rock in early July.... After he got back to Santa Barbara and I got back to OB, he called and said he wanted a quad fish. Here you go, Jared....Enjoy!

Quad for Jared

Don't worry Jared, it'll be back from the glasser soon! Jimmy Jazz himself from LokBox dropped the fin boxes in today. In the meantime, enjoy these pics.

World Bodysurfing Championships

I'll be bodysurfing in the World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside this weekend. No board necessary...and if it's two feet, it's still overhead.

We were at the premier for One California Day...and it is excellent! I definitely recommend this one. Check them out online at

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

How many people still ride the first board they shaped? I do--because it once was a longboard, until I stripped the glass and reshaped the remaining foam into this 5'10" fish. Upside down tint by Dewi at Tiger G glass and hand-foiled Gephart keels.

Flower Power

This is what happens when the surf is flat and PhotoShop starts calling my name....

6'2" x 20" x 2.5" EPS/Epoxy round-pin quad. This board is on it's way to Costa Rica for testing!

5'10" x 20.25" x 2.625" Singlefin, with beak nose, clear glass, gloss & polish, and a Skip Frye flex fin. This board was made with BioFoam by HomeBlown. BioFoam replaces 50% of the core foam ingredients with agricultural products. BioFoam shapes great and surfs even better--check them out.

Truck & Me @ Dogbeach

Here we are at Dog Beach, waxing up my new 5'10" biofoam singlefin for it's first go out.
